I’m so excited to officially announce the launch of my Substack today – the Inevitable Substack!
Twice a month, I’m going to be posting about the craft and the business of writing. I’ll do a close reading of a piece of work and talk about voice…or character…or humor…or showing versus telling. I’ll show you how I revise my work, how I shape ideas, how I come up with characters – all the good stuff. And eventually, I’ll be asking readers to offer themselves as tribute, and submit some work, and we’ll do close readings of that.
Why The Inevitable Substack? Short answer: in the aughts, I had a blog, and in the 2010s I had Twitter, and now that I am a middle-aged, mid-career writer, I’ve been thinking about how to give back, and leave the door open for the next generation of women writers. To that end, I’m going to be working with Blue Stoop, a literary nonprofit here in Philly, to give some financial support to up and coming writers…and I’ll be using the Inevitable Substack to share what I’ve learned, in addition to what I’m thinking.
Many of the posts will be free, but subscribers will have access to a chat feature, where I’ll answer questions…and, eventually, subscribers will also be able to submit their work for me to edit (plus some other goodies I’m mulling over).
My first post is up now, and it’s about showing versus telling, and how I would have edited Britney Spears’ memoir. I can’t wait to hear what you think.
