When you realize that you have the exact same dress in your closet that @melissamccarthy is wearing in @people magazine (thanks to@renttherunway), of course you make your husband take a picture! #plussizefashion #whoworeitbest
Last week I was in New York City, talking to booksellers about MRS. EVERYTHING.
Booksellers are smart people, and they asked a lot of smart questions, including “what do you know now that you wish you had known at the beginning of your career?”
I don’t remember how I answered, but I have been thinking about that question ever since, and here’s what I wish I’d said: I wish I’d known that it never gets easy.
Easier, yes. Over sixteen book, there are things I’ve learned to do better and things I’ve learned not to do at all.
But there are still disappointments and setbacks and frustrations.
Editors move on. Drafts don’t work out. And just when you’ve worked up your nerve to attempt the big, sprawling, historical novel you’ve been thinking about - and putting off — for years, you find out that you have breast cancer (spoiler alert — I had a lumpectomy last March, and I’m fine).
Which is all to say, it’s been a long road to get to this book. But in the end, writing saved me. I had a place to put all of the feelings of frustration and betrayal and sorrow, and the fear that I wasn’t going to see my kids grow up. I had a way to use all those feelings.
I believe that sometimes the best books come from the darkest places. And I’m so proud with how it all turned out!
If you want more of the story behind the story — or a chance to win an early signed copy MRS. EVERYTHING— there’s a link in the bio. Meanwhile, please enjoy these lovely shots of me from last March in a hospital gown with graffiti on my breast to remind the surgeon which one to cut. #writersofinstagram #mrseverything #novel #newsletter #giveaway
Remember when my husband was all into hasselbacking various potatoes? I think I know what I’m having for dinner tonight. #nytcooking #kielbasa #hasselback
