Happy Oscar night!

Meanwhile, in the department of things I can’t quite believe, the Delta Zeta sorority booted twenty-three members of the DePauw University chapter on the grounds of being “insufficiently committed” to the organization. It just so happens – total coincidence, I’m sure – that “the 23 members included every woman who was overweight. They also included the only black, Korean and Vietnamese members. The dozen students allowed to stay were slender and popular with fraternity men – conventionally pretty women the sorority hoped could attract new recruits.”

And here I was thinking that, when Jennifer Hudson is celebrated for her curves, when American Ferrara gives a tearful speech about what her character in “Ugly Betty” means for young viewers, and when Tyra Banks takes the stage in a leotard with her weight printed across her chest and tells anyone who thinks she's too big to kiss her fat ass, we were actually making some progress.

Evidently, not in Greencastle, Indiana.
